This work belongs to the portfolio of 30 lithographic plates created by the painter Pablo Picasso and the photographer André Villers, Diurnes.
Fascinated by Provence, where they both lived, they decided to collaborate on a project using decoupage with silhouettes of figures from fauna and mythology, typical of Picasso, applied to landscapes and natural elements photographed by Villers. The idea was to combine photograms with conventional photographic prints.
For Diurnes, Picasso made numerous decoupages by cutting people and animals out of paper. The horses, goats, and birds are realistic, but most of the time Picasso simplified the figures. In the late 1940s, the artist had visited Henri Matisse in his studio, who was just beginning to use the cut-out technique. Shortly afterward, Picasso began to draw with scissors. from 1953, Picasso began creating foldable metal sculptures that were related to paper cut-out models. The metal sculptures and paper sketches depict heads and bodies of animals and people, as well as masks. This repertoire reappears in Diurnes.
Diurnes, which can be translated from French as "diurnal butterfly" or "diurnal animals," is an unbound artist's book published in 1962 by the Berggruen Gallery in Paris. 30-plate lithographic offset print. Edition of 1000 copies. Copy: 368/1000
