Charming mid-century oil painting by French artist Jacques Marchand (born 1932), depicting Rue Lepic in Montmartre, one of Paris’s most storied streets and home to the iconic windmill famously painted by artists such as Renoir and Van Gogh. Marchand captures the vitality and atmosphere of the neighborhood with a lively, impressionistic touch that reflects his deep admiration for the French Impressionists.
Born in the south of France, Marchand was largely self-taught, developing his artistic voice through extensive travel and museum study throughout Europe, where he absorbed the influence of the great masters. His city scenes are particularly admired for their sense of movement, light, and everyday Parisian life. His work has been exhibited in major art centers across Europe and the United States and is held in numerous private collections.
This painting dates to the mid-1950s and is presented in a handsome giltwood period frame with a matching liner and linen insert, which complements the warmth and character of the work.
