Originally from Chicago, Linda Gritta now resides in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina where she finds ample inspiration for what she calls her "voracious appetite for color". Her work has been featured in Our State magazine, Carolina Home and Garden, House Beautiful, Studio Visit magazine and Art Seen Vol.17 magazine.
Color, surface, and form are the elements that most intrigue Asheville artist Linda Gritta. Her lush abstracts show evidence of the search that keeps her at ‘the edge of what we know’. Both organic and geometric elements play together in her work, sometimes teasing each other out.
Her paintings champion mystery over drama, questions over answers, and audacity over what is safe and conventional. Linda’s works require a “slow read,” with each painting inviting the viewer into a space of vitality, warmth, and fascination. Her paintings offer a respite and an escape from the barrage of the flat-screened, fast-paced world we live in these days.
“In my daily studio practice, I engage in an ongoing dialogue with each painting, a mixture of careful contemplation, precise decisions and raw chaos. It has been said that contemporary art needs to have “content” to be relevant. My “content” is beauty, not as some romantic notion, but as an expression of hopefulness in difficult times. Each painting is a small act of defiance in the face of all the tragedy around us. Using the language of evocative color, I consider myself an ‘activist’...one who, instead of emphasizing the cruelty in the world, celebrates and elevates the compassion, sacrifice, courage and kindness that can be found around us every day.”
