The painter who executed it is an artist active in the mid-seventeenth century, fascinated by the marine scenes disseminated by those landscape painters, whom we can define as proto-romantic, prone to a moving and vibrant painting, such as Salvador Rosa, Filippo Napolitano, Paul Bril and many others of Flemish-Dutch origin. It is possible to connect the work in question, with the restless seas that often represent shipwrecks by the Flemish painter Matthieu Van Plattenberg called Monsù Montagna (Antwerp 1608-1660), to a quick review of his pictorial catalog, we can note that there are many references that coincide, such as the type of boats, with red flags, the same topographical quality of the settlements, the atmospheres and the proto-romantic verve with which these scenarios are corroborated. The painting is in excellent condition and includes the contemporary gilded frame, finely engraved with floral spirals of central Italian manufacture. On the back there is a Verner stamp, with a dating. It would seem that these writings are posthumous to the period of execution of our painting. The measurements are: 95 x 73 cm only canvas; 117 x 95cm including frame. We enclose a certificate of authenticity with the sale. See less
