I found this piece, its artwork and wording interesting so I studied them a bit. It was most interesting so I am going to relate what I found to you. Keep in mind, however, that I am not an expert on this subject and much of what I learned came from AI (artificial intelligence) and its makers keep reminding us that it can make mistakes. So I ran it by two versions of AI - Gemini and CoPilot - and they may have given more or less detail in one area or the other, but the essentials are the same so I have confidence that what I am relating to you is pretty accurate. This plaque is more than decoration. It carries symbolic meaning and cultural heritage, making it a treasured addition for collectors, art enthusiasts or anyone seeking a piece that embodies prosperity and timeless elegance.
The first column of characters (second from the English standpoint) in the black, 富貴長春, translates to “Wealth and honor, everlasting spring”, that is, 富貴 (fù guì), which is Wealth and nobility and 長春 (cháng chūn), which is Eternal Spring, symbolizing longevity, renewal and enduring beauty. This is a traditional blessing often used in decorative art to convey prosperity and timeless vitality.
The second column (first from the English standpoint) is 庚申 (gēng shēn), which is a year in the Chinese sexagenary cycle. It recurs every 60 years and could correspond to years like 1920 or 1980, depending on the context. The nature of this article almost certainly assigns it to 1980. 玉榮 (yù róng) or 玉翠 (yù cuì) is likely the artist’s name or studio name. to break that down, 玉 (jade) is a symbol of purity and value and 榮 (glory) or 翠 (emerald green) are both elegant names often used in artist signatures.
The Red Seal Stamps are the artist seals, used to authenticate the work. They typically include the artist’s name or studio, and sometimes poetic phrases or symbols of good fortune. While the characters in the seals are hard to read due to stylization, they reinforce the authenticity and traditional value of the piece, adding cultural and collectible significance.
As to the picture, birds and blooming flowers (especially peonies or roses) are classic symbols of harmony, love and prosperity in Chinese art. The pairing of birds often represents companionship or marital bliss, while the flowers suggest beauty and abundance. It would be ideal for wall hanging or as a centerpiece in a curated collection of Asian art.
