This antique Korean bandaji chest dates to the late Joseon period, circa 1880–1910, and was traditionally used for storing bedding, garments, or personal documents. Bandaji chests are distinguished by their front-opening form and ornate brass fittings, designed to secure and protect household valuables.
Constructed from solid hardwood with hand-forged brass hardware, this example retains its original paper-lined interior, printed with classical hanja (Chinese characters) repurposed from period texts—a common and culturally significant practice in Korean furniture making. The dark, naturally aged surface and symmetrical brass mounts reflect restrained elegance prized in Confucian households.
