This vintage chubby cheeked angel figurine, hand-carved and hand-painted in a classic Spanish colonial style, is recognizable as Nahua folk art from Guerrero, Mexico and was made in the 1960s. Called "cachetones", these angels come in many forms, often like this but also three dimensional statues. This angel is a carved of wood from the Tzampamitla tree. Generally carved by men and then whimsically detailed, they are meant to hang from the wall; and in Mexico they are often hung with masks or other angel figurines or even demons and men and others.
