Beautiful oil on canvas painting from the second half of the 17th century, depicting the Madonna of Sorrows in the classic pose, with her hands crossed over her chest, looking upward with her face gently tilted to one side. Also known as the Madonna of the Seven Sorrows, she is usually depicted either in this pose or with one or more swords piercing her heart. This iconographic representation of the grief of a mother who loses her son in such a painful way. The work is unsigned and unframed.
Final considerations on the item:
The painting is of excellent size and clearly dated to the second half of the 17th century, a date deduced from the canvas, the pigment, the facial features, the hands, and the colors of the clothing. The Madonna's blue cloak and very dark burgundy habit are beautiful. The complexion is fabulous, note the beauty of the shadows and highlights on the face and hands in particular, and the patina covering the object is excellent. Given its style, the painting is attributable to a Northern Italian or German painter. The condition is excellent, considering its age, having been relined around 1990. Finally, the painting shows no signs of loss or restoration. An important, ancient, and truly well-crafted painting.
