The marble design is classic pietra dura (specimen marble) top, centred by a deep red marble roundel and surrounded by a segmented border of contrasting hardstones and marbles in greens, yellows, browns and reds. Pietra dura work of this type is strongly associated with Florentine workshops from the 19th century, inspired by Renaissance hardstone tables produced for the Medici court. Such tables were widely made for the Grand Tour market and remain highly collectible today The top is framed with a narrow light stone band and rests on a richly giltwood frieze decorated with beading and classical rosette mounts.
