Alfredo Sciarrotta was born in Rossano, Calabria, Italy, in 1907 and trained as a mechanical engineer before immigrating to the United States. Settling in Newport, Rhode Island, he became one of the most respected metal artisans of the mid-20th century. Working primarily in sterling silver, copper, and brass, Sciarrotta was celebrated for his clean, modern forms inspired by nature. His work was sold by prestigious retailers such as Cartier, Gump’s, and Shreve, Crump & Low, and he was often referred to as the “Modern Cellini” for his masterful hand craftsmanship.
