Two volumes with full leather bindings, gilt titles on the spines and marbled end papers. Each measures 8 5/8" x 5 1/2" x 1 3/4". Good condition consistent with age.
Samuel Butler's Hudibras is a famous 17th-century English satirical poem, a lengthy and witty burlesque that mocks the hypocrisy, fanaticism and antiquated ideas of the Puritanical faction (Roundheads) during the English Civil War, following the adventures of the absurdly learned but foolish knight, Sir Hudibras, and his squire, Ralpho, through comical, often nonsensical quests. Published in three parts (1663-1678), it's renowned for its clever rhymes, mock-heroic style, and enduring influence on English satire, blending Don Quixote's absurdity with Menippean wit.
