This evocative French figural sculpture depicts “The Angelus,” a traditional rural scene showing a farming couple pausing their work in quiet reflection and prayer. The subject became widely celebrated in 19th-century French art through the iconic painting by Jean-François Millet, and was later interpreted in sculptural form by European decorative art manufacturers.
The figures are sensitively modeled, with expressive body language and finely detailed garments and farming tools. The composition conveys a strong sense of intimacy, humility, and rural devotion, hallmarks of the Angelus theme. The sculpture retains its original patinated finish, with subtle tonal variations and light surface bloom inherent to the material and casting process, consistent with age and manufacture.
The rear of the base bears two original manufacturer’s marks, including the Onnaing France seal with fleur-de-lis and a stamped model number (BE 321), confirming French production in the early 20th century. Onnaing was well known for producing high-quality decorative sculptures inspired by popular academic and naturalist themes of the period.
A substantial and visually striking work, ideal for collectors of French decorative arts or for display in traditional, European, or curated interiors.
