This antique terrestrial table globe is a French example attributed to the celebrated cartographer Félix Delamarche, whose firm was renowned for producing high quality, geographically current cartography presented in elegant yet accessible forms. The globe reflects information drawn from late 18th and early 19th century voyages, making it particularly representative of its period.
The globe is set within a wooden meridian and horizontal ring, a distinctive and classic presentation, and is mounted on a single turned pedestal stand in ebonized wood. The overall form is both sculptural and refined, allowing the globe to function as an intellectual object as well as a decorative one.
French, circa 1780–1820.
