A gleaming testament to the elegance of the Art Deco era, this antique sterling silver jewelry and trinket box by Ahrendt & Kautzman is a striking fusion of craftsmanship and style. The lid features an exquisite engine-turned striped design, its clean, rhythmic lines catching and reflecting the light with timeless sophistication. At the center rests a classic rectangular cartouche engraved with the initials "TSM".
Measuring 6 inches wide, 3.5 inches deep, and 2.5 inches high, this substantial box has a satisfying heft, with a total weight of 436 grams. The thick silver walls account for an estimated 350 grams of pure sterling weight, a testament to its quality construction. Inside, a thin wood insulation lines the base, thoughtfully designed to protect delicate contents. Good antique condition, light scratches and small indents. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Founded around 1910, Ahrendt & Kautzman operated in Newark, New Jersey, and later in Rhode Island, crafting high-end silver hollowware and novelty items. Their hallmark “AK” in block letters alongside “STERLING” indicates a production period from around 1910 to 1922. Despite their relatively brief existence, Ahrendt & Kautzman produced items of remarkable craftsmanship—hand-hammered Arts & Crafts cigarette boxes, acid-etched Edwardian silver gilt jewelry boxes, and even nautical-themed cocktail pitchers often retailed through prestigious dealers like Theodore B. Starr and Tiffany & Co. As a small, nimble silversmith, they catered to luxury retailers with custom and presentation pieces, embedding their work into early 20th century American decorative arts.
Whether used to store fine jewelry, desk essentials, or cherished keepsakes, this box is as functional as it is beautiful — a perfect statement piece for a bedside table, dressing vanity, or executive desk. A rare surviving example from one of America’s fine early 20th-century silversmiths, this box offers both decorative flair and collectible significance.
