Antique Japanese scholar or devotional figure dating to the Meiji to early Taishō period (circa 1895–1915). Features a hand-painted composition head and hands, dressed in beautifully preserved original layered textile robes, including a light tan woven outer robe with subtle striping, contrasting black under-robe, and soft gray hakama-style layer. Retains its original twisted cord sash and carved wooden base. One original fabric shoe is missing, consistent with age. A finely crafted early Japanese export figure with wonderful character and authentic patina.
A wonderful example of early Japanese export craftsmanship and a strong decorative accent for collectors of Asian antiques, devotional objects, or antique figures.
