F. B. Rogers Silver Co. was a silversmithing company founded in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts in 1883. It was acquired by Edmund W. Porter and L.B. West, who incorporated the company and moved manufacturing operations to Taunton, Massachusetts in 1886. For several years, the company was known as West Silver Company, and produced silver products for the William Rogers Manufacturing Company of Hartford, Connecticut. About 1904, West and Porter retired and sold the company to William Davison, Carleton A. Woodward and H.E. Nearing, who changed the company's name back to F.B. Rogers.
In 1925 the company moved from 31 Winthrop Street to 59 Wales Street. In 1943 it moved to 414 West Water Street to a site formerly occupied by the Weir Stove Company (who produced Glenwood Ranges). In 1955, the F.B. Rogers Silver Company became a division of the National Silver Company. In 2009, the 414 West Water Street property was demolished.
And now on to this listing ...
This listing is for a hard-to-find elegant, and at the same time whimsical, clear glass casserole dish with a silver plated holder and lid shaped like a very large fish. This set was made by the FB Rogers Silver Company in the early 1950s and is marked FB ROGERS on the bottom of the holder.
The clear glass casserole dish contains the following words embossed on the bottom: MADE IN U.S.A. GLASS OVENWARE. It measures 9 3/4" in diameter and stands about 2 1/2" tall.
The fish-shaped holder is silver plated. Measuring from the tip of the nose across to the tip of the tail, I get 14 1/2" Measuring the other direction (outer edge of top fin to outer edge of bottom fin), I get 12 1/2". When the lid is on the holder, I measure about 6 1/2" from the table up to the top of the finial. The finial handle on the lid has a very detailed 3D image of a fish.
Excellent pre-owned condition with no chips, cracks, dents, or evidence of unusual wear on either the holder, the lid, or the clear glass casserole dish. Only a few tarnished areas on the silver plating. It's hard to tell whether this set was ever used because the tiny paper inspection sticker on the bottom of the holder is still present and in pristine condition. Absolutely lovely.
If you are looking for an incredible centerpiece for your table when you host your next seafood dinner, you've just found it!
