Original oil painting titled The Road to Town by Robert B. Harshe (American, 1879–1960). Executed in oil on Masonite, this work depicts a quiet rural roadway leading toward a distant town, rendered with strong composition, atmospheric depth, and confident brushwork.
Robert Harshe was a respected American painter, art administrator, and longtime director of the Art Institute of Chicago. His dual role as both artist and institutional leader places his work firmly within early 20th-century American art history. Paintings by Harshe reflect traditional American landscape sensibilities influenced by realism and early modernist restraint.
This piece works equally well as a collector’s painting or a design-forward landscape, offering warmth, structure, and a timeless American aesthetic.
