The painting depicts … Read more An original interior scene oil painting on masonite by Haitian artist Seymour Etienne Bottex (1922 – 2016). The painting depicts a young boy sneaking a peek through a window of a bedroom where a nude female primps at her vanity. The painting is signed "S.E. Bottex. Cap. Haitien" to the lower right corner. It is presented in a wide beveled frame with a gilt finish.

Born in Port-Margo, Haiti, Bottex first worked as a photographer. In the 1950s, he was compelled to shift his talent to the canvas. He joined the Centre d'Art and later the Galerie Issa in Port-au Prince. Considered one of the finest Haitian naïf painters, his murals in the Episcopal Cathedral de Sante Trinte are treasured as the most important achievement in Haitian modern art.

This striking and whimsical piece exemplifies Bottex's trademark elongated figures and arched cats, as well as a bright cheerful palette of colors which screams "Caribbean".
