This cabinet is a fine … Read more A nice cabinet bookcase designed by Jan de Jong for Pauluskerk Uden, The Netherlands, 1966. This cabinet is a fine example of Jan de Jong’s architectural approach to furniture within the Bossche School. It is finished in a warm olive green varnish, a surface that was likely refinished some decades ago and has since developed a soft, authentic patina. The front features two large wooden knobs as handles, and the doors can be closed with a lock if desired. Inside, though not shown in the photographs, the cabinet houses three shelves, providing a functional interior that matches its architectural exterior. The top of the cabinet reveals one of the most distinctive and recognizable elements in Bossche School furniture: the characteristic stool and table profile, a shape used throughout the movement’s design language. Along the surfaces, the trademark iron nails are rhythmically and precisely aligned, reinforcing the geometry of the piece and lending it a sculptural clarity. This cabinet originates from the Pauluskerk in Uden, a key project within De Jong’s oeuvre. The church has since been preserved as a monument and now serves as an office. We acquired this entire group of furniture directly from a priest in Eindhoven, where it had been relocated after the church in Uden closed. When that second church also closed, the furniture finally became available on the market, making this a rare opportunity to acquire original pieces directly tied to an important architectural site. Jan de Jong played a central role in translating the theoretical principles of Dom Hans van der Laan into built form. His impressive oeuvre made him one of the most important architects of the Bossche School. Through his extensive architectural practice, he gave the movement its physical language, uniting structure, proportion and silence into timeless architecture and furniture. Provenance: Pauluskerk, Uden, 1966. Acquired from a priest in Eindhoven after the church’s relocation and later closure. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
