This ceramic wall relief was designed by Noomi Backhausen and produced at Søholm Stentøj on the island of Bornholm. Executed in chamotte stoneware, the piece demonstrates Søholm’s characteristic emphasis on sculptural depth, tactile surfaces, and expressive glazing.
Noomi Backhausen was a Danish ceramic artist closely associated with Søholm during the mid-20th century and is particularly recognised for her reliefs and wall pieces from the 1960s and 1970s. Her work is defined by a strong graphic language, organic motifs, and a pronounced sense of surface modelling, often enhanced through deep cobalt and earth-toned glazes.
Bornholm played a central role in Danish ceramic modernism, and Søholm was among the most influential workshops of the period, known for its close collaboration between designers, decorators, and skilled craftsmen. Reliefs by Noomi Backhausen are today well documented in design history and increasingly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian modern ceramics.
The relief’s sculptural form creates subtle variations in light and shadow, giving the piece a dynamic presence on the wall while remaining firmly rooted in the Danish modern tradition. This piece has an attribution mark,
