In Gaia Diptych #125, Jaume Llorens Bach inverts our perception of up and down, left and right, reality and fantasy.

Above, the waxing gibbous moon hangs elegantly in the sky under a blanket of dense, fluffy white clouds. Below, the viewer's perception of reality is altered while the tide's waves wander laconically into the shoreline. The light shining on the surface of the water is refracted, causing a bright expanse of silver to bleed across the frame. In color and form it reflects the clouds above, linking heaven and earth.

The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole.

In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'.
