This is an antique Japanese calligraphy hanging scroll (kakemono) bearing an inscription attributed to Nogi Maresuke (乃木希典, 1849–1912), a prominent military general and historical figure of the Meiji period.
The calligraphy was personally written by Nogi Maresuke, whose brushwork is known for its restrained strength and dignified simplicity, reflecting the values of discipline, loyalty, and moral integrity associated with his life and character. The inscription is executed in black ink on paper and mounted in a traditional vertical scroll format.
Such calligraphic works were often presented as gifts, commemorative pieces, or displayed in tokonoma alcoves, particularly in tea rooms or formal interiors. Today, calligraphy by Nogi Maresuke is appreciated not only for its aesthetic qualities but also for its historical and cultural significance, representing the spirit of the Meiji era.
The scroll shows natural signs of age and wear consistent with traditional works of this period, contributing to its authentic wabi-sabi character.
