Beautiful bright Antique Chinese red wedding or betrothal basket.
These lidded baskets, typically red lacquered, historically were used to carry dowry gifts, food, and other items between the families of the wedding or engagement parties at ceremonies.
This specific basket was hand carved from wood as well as hand painted with layers upon layers of lacquer. The red colors and gold trim paint carry symbolism to the Asian culture wishing love, joy, wealth and good fortune. Hand painted cranes and carved Foo Dogs on the handle.
