This is a rare set of 4 tiger oak bentwood dining or bistro chairs by Jacob and Josef Kohn & Mundus from the tail end of the Vienna Secession period.
The chairs are made of solid wood throughout, with the distinctive wavy, striped grain patterns of tiger oak. The ladder backs have 3 shaped rungs between two round stiles. The seats are stuffed with the original horsehair padding and then newly upholstered in art nouveau style fabric. The legs are supported by an unusual and curvaceous bentwood stretcher. The undersides of the seats retain the original paper labels, one of which says “Patented March 29, 1910.” Three of the chairs are stamped “Made in Poland,” and one is stamped “Made in Czechoslovakia." The metal brackets reinforcing the legs are stamped with the patent date of September 22, 1914.
The early 20th century chairs are in very good antique condition. The chairs have a beautiful patina with warm, rich coloring and charming antique character. The chairs are rock solid with no wiggle at all to the joints. Wear and tear commensurate with age and indicative of use, including overall loss to finish, older repairs, light scratches, dings and cosmetic imperfections. Brand new upholstery fabric is free of flaws. Please see photos for more details about condition.
Each chair measures 16" wide, 18" deep, and 34.75" tall with a 18.5" seat height.
More information about Kohn & Mundus:
Jacob & Josef Kohn, also known as J. & J. Kohn, was an Austrian furniture and interior design company founded in Vienna in 1849 by Jacob Kohn with his son Josef Kohn. In 1914, J. & J. Kohn merged with another large furniture manufacturer called Mundus, forming Kohn-Mundus. In 1922 and 1923, Kohn-Mundus merged with Thonet, becoming the world’s largest furniture manufacturer. Their combined output featured elegant, curved designs typical of the Vienna Secession and Art Nouveau. Kohn's works can be seen in a number of museums around the world today, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna and Disseny Hub Barcelona.
