Women in Paris at the Café Aux Deux Amis, circa 1970 Photographer: Gökşin Sipahioğlu Black & White Print This striking black-and-white image captures a moment of bold Parisian flair at the iconic Café Aux Deux Amis in the early 1970s. Two fashion-forward women lounge at a sidewalk café — one defiantly smoking a cigar while confidently straddling a rattan chair, her posture mirroring the rising independence and boldness of women of the era. The other sits elegantly, absorbed in a newspaper, legs crossed, embodying composed sophistication. The café's casual bustle, fashion, and attitude portray the spirit of Paris street culture — self-aware, stylish, and slightly rebellious. Fashion & Lifestyle Context: During this period, women smoking in public, particularly cigars or cigarettes, became a symbol of the "New Woman": liberated, independent, and socially self-assured. In this image, the photographer captures the evolving codes of femininity and power — where smoking was no longer taboo, but a visual marker of emancipation, modernity, and sophistication. About Photographer Gökşin Sipahioğlu (1926–2011) Gökşin Sipahioğlu was a prominent Turkish photojournalist and the founder of Sipa Press, one of the most influential photo agencies of the 20th century. Born in İzmir, Turkey, he began his career as a journalist and editor for the daily Hürriyet.
