Salomé, a one-act tragedy by Oscar Wilde, retells the biblical story of Salome, the stepdaughter of Herod Antipas, who becomes infatuated with the prophet Jokanaan (John the Baptist). After performing the seductive "Dance of the Seven Veils" for Herod, she demands Jokanaan's head on a silver platter as her reward, leading to his execution and her own death, exploring themes of obsession, desire, and power through poetic, decadent language. Originally written in French in 1891, the play was banned in Britain for its biblical subject matter and gained fame through its English translation and illustrations by Aubrey Beardsley.
