John Gibson is a painter based out of Greenfield, Massachusetts, who is known for his still life paintings of balls and spheres. Since the 1990s, this has been Gibson’s exclusive interest as he strives to explore the illusion of three dimensionality on a two dimensional surface. The curvature of the simple pattern of the balls and the relationship of light and shadows to create volume, are both elements that further push the simple complexity that Gibson executes in his paintings. He explores the relationship of opposing elements in his pieces such as; light and dark, two dimensional and three dimensional, minimal and fullness, etc. Gibson states the European still life paintings of the 17th century are a major influence on his work. However where Gibson’s work separates itself is the lack of context and environment. The extremely simple environment of his paintings only strengthens the spheres as they become the sole focus of the piece.
John Gibson attended the Rhode Island School of Design where he received his BFA. He then went on to attend Yale University where he received his MFA. His work has been featured in many group exhibitions and as well as solo exhibitions such as: “The Space in Between”, 2016, Caldwell Snyder Gallery, San Francisco; “Jazz”, 2020,Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, Brattleboro, VT; and “New Paintings”, 2023, William Havu Gallery, Denver, CO. Additionally selected public collections of his work include: Ackland Museum Chapel Hill, NC; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Museum at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI; Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, MA; University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA.
