Moby Dick inspired where the whale is dominant swallowing the schooner. Nautical theme. It has a deep carving of a whale on the lid. This item is unusual in many ways, one of which is that it is carved out of a SINGLE block of wood. The box is from a Maine estate and the wood is very heavy - could be maple or walnut- showing signs of oxidation from age. Lid sits on top of box with both the top and the box meeting as a flat surface. Believed to be made in the 1800's.
