A handsome American Federal period mahogany secretary chest, stylistically attributable to New England, (possibly Boston or Salem, Massachusetts), circa 1800–1820. … Read more A handsome American Federal period mahogany secretary chest, stylistically attributable to New England, (possibly Boston or Salem, Massachusetts), circa 1800–1820. The piece reflects the refined neoclassical vocabulary and patriotic symbolism characteristic of Federal-era American cabinetmaking. The upper case is fitted with three short drawers above a central locking cupboard door, inlaid with an oval spread-wing eagle motif. Flanking paneled compartments create a balanced and architectural composition. The lower case features three graduated drawers, retaining their original round cast-brass pulls decorated with raised eagle motifs, along with original key escutcheons. Constructed in richly figured mahogany, the chest is embellished throughout with fine string inlay outlining the drawer fronts and case, and raised on square, tapering legs with contrasting inlaid decoration. The restrained ornament, clean lines, and light proportions are emblematic of New England Federal design. Original locks and brass hardware remain intact, with keys included.
