Newar Gilt-Bronze Figure of Vajrasattva
Nepal, Kathmandu Valley, probably 17th–18th century
Height: 35 cm | Weight: 416 g
An exceptional gilt-bronze figure of Vajrasattva, crafted in the Newar tradition of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Vajrasattva, the bodhisattva of purification and indestructible wisdom, is depicted in a meditative vajrasana posture on a double lotus pedestal, with the right hand holding a vajra and the left hand likely holding a bell—attributes symbolizing method and emptiness.
The serene face with a gentle smile and closed eyes reflects inner tranquility, while the hands and body proportions demonstrate refined Newar aesthetics. The figure is richly adorned with jewelry, a dhoti, and decorative sashes; the five-leaf crown symbolizes the five wisdoms of a Buddha. The back is intricately detailed, characteristic of ritual and decorative practices of Newar artisans.
Executed using the lost-wax (cire perdue) technique, the bronze retains traces of gilding, and the natural patina and wear indicate age and ritual use. The style, proportions, and detailing correspond to later Newar Vajrasattva figures made for Tibetan patrons, suggesting a probable date of the 17th–18th century.
This figure represents significant spiritual and artistic value and is a superb example of Nepalese Buddhist bronze craftsmanship, reflecting the rich iconographic and aesthetic tradition of Newar artisans.
Provenance: Formerly in a private collection, Vienna, Austria; acquired in the mid-20th century.
