This finely detailed, hand-painted English Coat of Arms dates to circa 1850 and is a striking example of mid-19th-century heraldic art, presented in a beautiful solid wood antique frame. The frame features an elegant double matte, with an outer metallic gold surround and an inner brown velvet liner that creates a rich, eye-catching contrast and draws focus to the artwork.
At the center is a quartered shield combining two family lineages, a common heraldic practice signifying marriage or inheritance. The right half of the shield is attributed to the Wyatt family, traditionally associated with courage, vigilance, and noble service, while the left half remains unidentified, likely representing a maternal or allied family whose arms have yet to be conclusively determined. Lions appear prominently within the shield, long-standing symbols of bravery, strength, and authority in English heraldry. Above the shield rises a distinctive crest depicting an ostrich holding a horseshoe in its beak, a powerful emblem of endurance and resilience; the ostrich was historically believed to digest iron, and the horseshoe symbolizes strength, protection, and good fortune. Beneath the arms is the Latin motto, “Deo adjuvante non timendum,” which translates to “With God’s help, there is nothing to fear,” expressing a message of faith, confidence, and steadfast resolve.
The frame measures 9.75" x 11.25", with a visible art window of 4.75" x 6", giving the piece an intimate and refined presence. An original vintage sales label is noted on the back. Good antique condition, there are areas of toning to the paper and age-related wear. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
