This extraordinary antique lucerne whale oil lamp is an impressive surviving example of early lighting design, dramatically enhanced with a rare and highly decorative fireplace screen shade. The five-burner lucerne form—originally designed for efficient, steady illumination—rests on an ornate cast-iron stand, while the upper portion supports a stained and painted glass screen featuring an image of Napoleon I at its center. The surrounding blue, gold, and green glasswork is richly patterned with scrolling foliage, giving the piece a striking visual presence.
The adjustable arm and detailed ironwork showcase the craftsmanship of the period, making this both a functional historic lamp and an artistic decorative object. Pieces combining whale oil technology with integrated fireplace screens are seldom encountered today, and this example, with its elaborate Napoleonic imagery, makes a commanding statement in any collection or period interior. It can serve as an evocative accent lamp or simply as a sculptural artifact of 19th-century domestic life.
In nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and prior use. The stained glass has undergone extensive repairs but is complete, with all panels present, and the metalwork displays a desirable, time-earned patina. A remarkable and rare find for collectors of early lighting, Napoleonic memorabilia, and distinctive decorative arts. 45h x 20w x 15d
