The gown with a V-shaped bodice and bustled skirt was in fashion during the 1840s and 1850s. The small lace or embroidered cap with ribbons, called a day cap or coffee bonnet, was worn by French and American women during those decades. These caps appear in many paintings and photos from the mid 1830s to the mid 1850s. Other items to notice in the exquisitely detailed silhouette are her fancy ring and bracelet and the pocket watch or locket suspended on a chain pinned to her bodice.

No identification of subject, artist, date, or location. Last known prior location Columbia, South Carolina area. Image 8 3/4" wide x 12" high, frame 12 5/8" wide x 15 7/8" high. Recently conservation framed with museum glass. Eyelets and wire for hanging. See less
