CATHERINE BOGARDUS died in New London, New Hampshire, on June 3, 2008 at the age of 96, a very dear friend and inspiring energy to those who knew her well. At the time of her death she was in the presence of her God-child and relative, Carol Bogardus Howell, and Alice and Bart Bates, close friends. Catherine lived in Stamford until moving to New London about 35 years ago. Born December 14, 1912, she was the only child of the late J. Howard Bogardus, former president of the Fist National Bank of Stamford and the late Kate Noble Bogardus. Catherine was an artist par excellence. She captured the light, life, and beauty of New Hampshire, and all of nature, in oil paintings. Her painting and teaching theme has been, "The Light in the heavens reveals, reflects, and determines the beauty in the earth." Catherine studied in New York City at the Art Students League, was a member of the Salmagundi Club, and also studied under the tutelage and friendship of the famous painter Frank Vincent DuMond. She taught art classes at the Stamford Museum as well as in the New York and Connecticut area for 50 years. Catherine is a descendant of the First Domine of New York City, or New Amsterdam, and a bronze plaque honoring the name of the Domine Everardus Bogardus is on the wall of the Clearing House in Wall Street to this day. Her work has been shown in many exhibits, including the Hudson Valley Art Exhibition. She has received many awards.
