The artwork depicts a scene of a stormy California coast, with a focus on flowers. Produced using oil painting techniques on canvas and paper, the piece showcases the artist's use of palette and impasto to achieve a textured and dynamic effect. This artwork captures the essence of the 1950s and reflects the unique beauty of the California landscape during that time period.
Born in Los Angeles, CA on July 6, 1900. Flower grew up in southern California. In 1920 he sailed for Europe to study art in Paris at Académie Julian and Ecole des Beaux Arts and in Rome at the Beaux Arts Academy. After five years in Europe, he returned to his native city and established a studio-home in the Arroyo Seco. He taught at the Los Angeles Art Institute in 1928 and operated his own art school in Pasadena in 1937. For awhile he shared a studio with Nicolai Fechin and studied privately with Jules Pagès. During the 1930s he painted portraits and a few landscapes of the area around his home. During WWII Flower began working as an illustrator for the aircraft industry and continued in that line of work until retiring in 1964. For many years he lived in San Clemente, CA and produced many oils of the coast near his home. He died there on Jan. 11, 1976. Exh: Pasadena Society of Artists, 1935.
