This ceramic sculpture belongs to Óscar Aldonza’s Extravagantes, a series that embraces eccentricity, humour and the expressive possibilities of material contrast. The body is built in high-temperature clay coated with translucent Shino and a dark, volcanic texture created through carborundum, producing a highly tactile surface that shifts with the light. The small porcelain head introduces a deliberate mismatch of scale, while the red-topped form evokes the cap of an amanita mushroom, reinforcing the work’s playful and subtly surreal character. Aldonza’s working process relies on direct modelling, intuitive gesture and the acceptance of irregularity as a conceptual tool. Each Extravagante is unique, shaped by unpredictable chemical reactions in the kiln and by the artist’s interest in individuality, oddness and the joyful acceptance of one’s own peculiarities.
