Figurative mixed media sculpture combining raku-fired ceramic and carved black poplar wood with oil polychromy. Created by Spanish sculptor Óscar Aldonza, whose practice bridges intuitive modelling and material experimentation, this work forms part of his People / Xentes series. Aldonza explores how personal identity is shaped through tension between individual experience and collective belonging. The head, modelled in local white clay and subjected to raku firing, retains the characteristic crackling and smoke-infused surfaces produced by thermal shock. The torso, carved directly into poplar wood, preserves deliberate tool marks that emphasize the physical encounter between artist, material and form. This convergence of clay and wood underlines fragility, resilience and the layered construction of the human figure. Within the People series, each sculpture introduces a distinct character, yet together they suggest a shared human condition—where singularity coexists with community and emotional resonance emerges through the interplay of materials.
