This atmospheric 19th-century tinted lithograph depicts a rural landscape in the La Guaira region of coastal Venezuela, published in 1888 as part of Karl Martin’s important scientific and travel documentation of northern South America and the Caribbean basin. The scene presents a quiet countryside road leading past a small thatched hut, surrounded by dense tropical vegetation and tall palm trees, capturing the visual character of the Venezuelan coastal hinterland during the late 19th century.
The modest dwelling, constructed from local natural materials and crowned with a palm-leaf roof, sits beside a gently curving dirt road edged with stones. A small chicken appears near the path, adding a subtle detail of daily rural life. Behind the hut, lush foliage and palms rise against a softly clouded sky, creating depth and a strong sense of place typical of Venezuela’s humid coastal landscapes near La Guaira. Although Karl Martin is best known for his geological and scientific work, plates such as this one reveal a refined artistic sensitivity in documenting settlement patterns, rural life, and natural scenery alongside his academic observations. The restrained sepia-toned coloration enhances the calm, timeless atmosphere of the scene, making it appealing both as a historical document and as a decorative interior piece. The La Guaira region was of great importance as the principal port of Caracas and a key gateway between Venezuela and the wider Caribbean world.
Views of this area from the 19th century are increasingly scarce and are highly sought after by collectors of Venezuelan history, Caribbean–South American maritime routes, and colonial-era travel imagery. This print is especially attractive for collectors of: – Venezuelan historical views – La Guaira and Caracas region imagery – Caribbean–South American coastal history – 19th-century travel illustration – Dutch scientific and colonial exploration Condition report: Good original condition. Light overall age toning throughout the sheet. Minor scattered foxing visible in the margins. Slight edge wear consistent with age. Image remains clean and well preserved. No tears or restorations observed.
