This finely executed geological map of Bonaire was published in 1888 as part of Karl Martin’s major scientific work Bericht über eine Reise nach Niederländisch West-Indien, issued by the respected Leiden academic publisher E. J. Brill. Karl Martin, Professor of Geology at the University of Leiden, was one of the most influential Dutch geologists of the late 19th century, and his research in the Caribbean formed the fundamental basis for the modern geological understanding of the Dutch West Indies.
The map presents Bonaire in elegant hand-colored lithography, clearly distinguishing the island’s geological formations through a refined palette of soft browns, greens, yellows, and muted earth tones. Volcanic rock, coral limestone, tuff, alluvial deposits, and older sedimentary formations are precisely differentiated, giving a layered and highly readable view of the island’s geological structure. Coastlines, bays, settlements, and terrain features are crisply engraved, while the interior reveals the deep natural history of the island in a balanced and visually harmonious composition. To the right of the main map, a tall “Ideal Profile” cross-section illustrates geological layers and elevation through the western and central parts of Bonaire. This profile provides a rare visual interpretation of stratigraphy beneath the surface and significantly enhances the scientific and decorative appeal of the sheet. The combination of plan view and vertical section is characteristic of the highest level of late 19th-century geological cartography. Historically, this map belongs to the most important scientific documentation period of Dutch colonial research in the Caribbean. It reflects the era when geology, mineral resources, and natural formations were systematically studied and mapped throughout the Dutch West Indies. Today, the Bonaire geological map is highly sought after by collectors of Caribbean material, Dutch colonial cartography, scientific maps, and museum-grade decorative wall art. with its refined historic coloring, strong composition, and intellectual depth, this map works equally well in traditional studies, contemporary interiors, corporate boardrooms, hotel suites, and curated library walls. It also forms a superb matched Caribbean wall set with the geological maps of Aruba and Curaçao from the same publication.
