poul henningsen designed the three-shade system as early as 1925-1926, when he collaborated with louis poulsen to create the first lamps for an exhibition in paris. Throughout his life, henningsen strove to create glare-free light, directing light where it is needed and producing soft shadows. Thus, henningsen designed not just a lamp, but an entire system, of which around a thousand different models have been produced over the years. The numbers of the ph lamps refer to the shade size. The ph 4 1/2-3 1/2 table lamp has a top shade of approximately 45 cm. It was introduced in its current form in 1990.
