Blown glass sculpture,
design by alfredo barbini
origin murano
period 1970s
designer alfredo barbini (murano, 1912 – 2007) was one of the leading figures in murano glassmaking in the 20th century. Born into a family of glassmakers, he started working in the furnace at a very young age and quickly developed exceptional control over the material. Between the 1940s and 1950s, working first for seguso and then in his own glassworks, he developed a personal style: compact masses of submerged glass, zoomorphic and abstract forms traversed by an internal light that defines a sort of glass sculpture. His contribution is twofold. On the one hand, he renewed the murano tradition without breaking it, bending classical techniques to a modern sensibility; on the other, he gave his objects an almost narrative character, transforming fish, birds, and stylized figures into crystallized micro-stories. It is this synthesis of craftsmanship and plastic vocation that makes barbini a central figure in the transition of glass from decorative artifact to true artistic medium of the 20th century.
