This elegant Japanese tray (obon) has a wooden core finished with a deep black lacquer, over which a finely engraved floral pattern spreads. In the black surface, lush peony blossoms (botan) and leaves are drawn, their lines glowing in a warm reddish-brown tone. In Japan, the botan is known as the “king of flowers” and symbolises wealth, elegance, and confident beauty – a lovely detail for anyone who appreciates meaningful decoration.
Dimensions: height 2 cm, width 36 cm, depth 24 cm.
The tray dates from the 1920s and has those characteristic slightly rounded corners and raised rim that make it suitable for everyday use. The top shows light scratches and traces of use consistent with its age; the lacquer still has a beautiful shine and the pattern remains crisp.
In an interior, this obon works both functional and decorative: perfect for serving tea or coffee, a small tea ceremony, fruit or sweets, but also striking as a base for a still life with a vase, candles, or a small ikebana arrangement.
A stylish, graphic accent that subtly brings Japanese atmosphere into your home.
