a leading figure in twentieth-century murano glass, paolo venini (1895–1959) passionately contributed to the vitality of the art of glassmaking for almost forty years, achieving extraordinary results that were also recognized internationally. Originally from milan, he was already a partner of cappellin venini when he founded the v.s.m. Venini & c. Glassworks in 1925. His partners included napoleone martinuzzi and francesco zecchin, from whom he separated in 1932. He became president of the company and worked tirelessly as venini's great director until his death in 1959. The venini furnace is the largest and best-known still in operation on the island of murano. It is also the only example in the world of a furnace with twelve ovens that simultaneously process 12 different colors, for a total of 125 possible colors at their disposal.
