Set includes “The Discovery of America” volumes I & II, “Old Virginia And Her Neighbours” volumes I & II, “The Critical Period of American History”, “The Dutch and Quakers Colonies in America” volumes I & II, “The American Revolution” volumes I & II, and “Beginnings of New England”, Published by The Riverside Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1901. Good condition - wear consistent with age. Each volume measures 8" x 5 1/4" x 1 1/8". Together the ten volumes take up 12 3/4" of shelf space.

Octavo three-quarter tan calf, blind and gilt stamped, over marbled paper-covered boards, tan morocco spine labels, gilt edges.

John Fiske (1842 – 1901) was an American philosopher and historian. He was a university lecturer on philosophy at Harvard, later becoming a Harvard history instructor and librarian from 1872-1879. In 1880, Fiske began to write and speak about American history, promoting the concept of the United States as the climax of a historical evolution toward a free democratic republic. He gave many hundreds of lectures, chiefly upon American history, in the principal cities of the United States and Great Britain, including the University College London in 1879 and at the Royal Institution of Great Britain in 1880.
