The wood has a warm medium to … Read more Atmospheric Japanese tray in solid wood, made in the tradition of Sanuki-bori carving. The wood has a warm medium to dark brown tone with a soft sheen and an even grain pattern that flows across the base and the rim.

Dimensions: height 6 cm, diameter 24.5 cm.

At the centre, a flowering plant with its root ball is carved in low relief and then coloured with fine brushstrokes.

The slender leaves, open blossom and twisting roots create a lively motif that contrasts beautifully with the calm wooden ground. The gently rising wall and wide foot give the piece a look that is both stately and light.

The tray is in good vintage condition and can be used in many ways today: as a low bowl for nuts, fruit or small snacks, as a place to keep keys and jewellery in the hallway, or simply as a decorative object on a sideboard or Japanese cabinet.
