Originally compiled by the renowned French cartographer Guillaume de l’Isle and issued in Nuremberg by the Homann Heirs around 1740, the map combines French geographic accuracy with the distinctive German engraving style of the Homann workshop. The result is a clear, decorative and highly informative regional map of southern France, extending from the Rhône and Languedoc to the Gulf of Genoa and the Mediterranean coast. One of the most appealing features is the large lower cartouche, overflowing with the coats of arms of the historical provinces and noble families of the region, supporting a monumental architectural plinth. A second cartouche at upper left provides an extensive list of dioceses and administrative divisions. The colouring is original and remains bright, with clear boundary outlines and pleasant tonal washes that lend the map strong decorative presence. Provence—home to Marseille, Toulon, Arles, Avignon and the Var region—remains a highly sought-after subject among collectors of French regional cartography. Condition report: Good condition overall. Original hand colour still fresh. Blank margins lightly foxed with a few small marginal tears, none affecting the engraved image and easily backed if desired. Plate impression strong, paper stable, and image area clean without stains or discolouration. Framing tips: This map displays beautifully in a natural walnut, dark oak or antiqued gold frame. A cream or soft ivory mat highlights the warm 18th-century colours while giving breathing space around the decorative cartouche. For a more modern interior, a thin black frame with a white archival mat provides a clean contrast and emphasises the map’s structural details.
