Antique etagere with fine inlay work
paris
wood, brass
around 1870
dimensions: h × w × d: 77 × 50 × 37 cm
three-tier side furniture with a single-light body and a surrounding gallery made of open-worked brass.
the panels are veneered with dark-stained burl wood and bear figurative marquetry with musical instruments and flowers. Each of the three panels shows different, carefully cut inlays of light-coloured and partly colour-stained wood. We see rectangular frames made of light and dark contrasting thread inlays.
the four turned legs are ebonised and accentuated with brass ring elements. The upper body has a shallow drawer with original brass fittings.
the filigree construction of the furniture is typical of small french furniture from the second half of the 19th century.
interesting facts:
there is a printed manufacturer's label on one side of the drawer with the inscription:
"guyot - fabricant de meubles & tapisseries - 6, rue monsigny & passage choiseul, 79 - près la rue de choiseul - paris."
both of these addresses were located in the 2nd arrondissement in the immediate vicinity of the choiseul shopping and workshop arcade, a centre for the furniture and decoration trades in the 19th century. The label identifies guyot as a furniture manufacturer and dealer.
with its marquetry of musical instruments and floral and hunting horn motifs, the furniture corresponds exactly to the romantic aesthetic that prevailed in paris between around 1860 and 1880. Its meticulous workmanship, which is also geared towards rational production, is in the tradition of the upscale mass-produced furniture offered by the furniture manufacturers and dealers along the passage choiseul. The combination of burl wood veneers, ebonised columns and brass gallery corresponded to the sophisticated parisian taste in furnishings.
