The prolific type designer Ed Benguiat put his indelible stamp on Esquire magazine.
Ed was a legendary American type and graphic designer, his distinctively expressive styles, became a true icon of modern typography.
The iconic Esquire Logo and unique font, has evolved significantly since its 1933 debut, which featured a light, handwritten logotype. It became bolder and taller in 1945, and in 1956, a strong, flattened, and horizontally extended version was introduced, which is the basis for the modern logo.
Logo History
• 1933: The first logo is introduced as an elegant, handwritten logotype in black.
• 1945–1955: The letters are made bolder, taller, and slightly narrower, similar to the original
• 1956–1978: The logo is bolder, extended horizontally, letters flat, like modern logo.
• 1978–1980: Redesign w/uppercase serif font set above red banner "Fort Nightly".
• 2017: The 1956 version of the logo is reinstated, with minor changes to the wordmark.
