The first painting depicts an idyllic landscape with classical architectural ruins reminiscent of ancient Rome, with shepherds and cattle visible in the foreground near a stream. The second painting contrasts a dark foreground populated by shepherds and flocks with a background of ruins (Ponte Mammolo) and a cloudy sky. Historical Notes: Accompanied by contemporary gilded frames, the canvases are attributed to the Neapolitan landscape artist Domenico Brandi. Trained with his father, a skilled perspective artist and decorator, our artist drew on the Neapolitan landscape tradition, particularly that of Gargiulo, before traveling to Rome, where he worked in the workshop of Rosa da Tivoli. In the Eternal City, Domenico acquired his master's flair for illustration and delicate bucolic spirit. Our paintings beautifully express this blend of literary tradition and a picturesque vision of nature, which would dominate his entire career. Indeed, he will be remembered by De Dominici as a painter of animal subjects, with results that would influence the art of Michele Pagano (Naples, 1697; 1732) and Nicola Viso (1724; 1742).
