Late 20th century print of "A Masquerader on Horseback" originally drawn by Leonardo Da vinci circa 1517-1518. "A drawing of a young man on horseback, in profile to the right. He wears a masquerade costume, with many feathers, ribbons, and other elaborations. He carries a lance in his right hand. Leonardo was employed at the court of Francis I of France from late 1516 until his death in 1519. At this period, courtly entertainments, requiring ingenious settings and costumes, were popular throughout Europe. Major artists, such as Leonardo, were often involved in designing them, as this drawing demonstrates. The rider’s costume is extremely eye-catching; combining checked and striped fabrics with fur, quilting, and ribbons, which demonstrates the rich and exotic nature of the French court at this time. Text adapted from 'Leonardo da Vinci: the Divine and the Grotesque'" (Royal Collection Trust) Black painted wood & gesso frame with gilt inner border; gray mat. "Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 1452 – 2 May 1519) was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. While his fame initially rested on his achievements as a painter, he has also become known for his notebooks, in which he made drawings and notes on a variety of subjects, including anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, painting, and palaeontology. Leonardo is widely regarded to have been a genius who epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal, and his collective works comprise a contribution to later generations of artists matched only by that of his younger contemporary Michelangelo."
